When setting up the data sources for your queries, you could enrich your data set with the Instagram hashtag search.
Instagram hashtag search is a way of getting access to Instagram’s public content tagged with a given hashtag. You can combine this search with other data sources or use it exclusively.
What Hashtags Can Be Added to Hashtag Search
There are very few limitations when adding hashtags to the hashtag search.
If you’re adding a hashtag for an upcoming campaign that hasn’t been applied on any Instagram post before, first publish some content using the hashtag. Once it’s done, it’ll be possible to add the hashtag to the search.
Some hashtags could be rejected by Instagram. This can happen when Instagram bans a hashtag from the use because of an excessive amount of inappropriate content (such as provocative or racist images).
Monthly Limit For Hashtags in the Instagram Hashtag Search
Every month you can actively use up to 100 unique hashtags as a data source in the Instagram hashtag search. Every hashtag that collects content during the given month, we call them active hashtags, is considered and it doesn’t matter for how long it is active.
Once you reach the limit, you won’t be able to add new hashtags until the beginning of the following month when the count of active hashtags starts again.
Too abstract? To give you an example, imagine the following situation. Or, if you prefer charts and tables, you can scroll to the schema below:
At the beginning of the month (week 1), there are 90 unique and active hashtags in your Instagram hashtag search.
During the next week (week 2), you remove 50 hashtags. At this moment, there are only 40 active hashtags (those collecting content). However, the number of hashtags you’ve already used remains 90 and there are 10 hashtags you can still add during the current month.
At the beginning of week 3, you add 10 new hashtags. This way you reach the limit of 100 hashtags that were active at any moment of this month.
You also remove 30 hashtags from the current queries, leaving the number of hashtags collecting content at 20.
Even though you would like to add 10 more hashtags during week 4, it’s not possible because you reached the limit of total active hashtags the previous week.
When the following month starts, there are 20 active hashtags in your Instagram hashtag search, so you can start adding up to 80 new hashtags to your search.
Let’s imagine another scenario:
It’s the end of the month and you are actively using 100 unique hashtags in the search. All of them are a part of queries that will continue collecting data the following month.
When the next month arrives and the monthly limit count starts again, you’ll end up reaching the limit again already at the beginning of the month.
What To Do When You Reach or Would Reach the Limit of Active Hashtags
When you reach the monthly limit of total active hashtags in the Instagram hashtags search, to add new ones, you’ll need to wait until the limit renews at the beginning of the following month.
However, make sure that you reduce the number of hashtags from some of your active hashtag searches before the end of the month. If there are 100 active hashtags in your search at the end of the month, they will be transferred into the next one and the limit will be hit again, right away.
When Reactivating a Query Would Exceed the Limit of Active Hashtags
It might happen that you’ll need to reactivate a query you created in the past and it would be impossible due to exceeding the total limit of active hashtags.
In such a case, you can:
- Try removing one or more hashtags from the hashtag search of the given query to meet the limit.
- If a) is not possible or wouldn’t be enough, try keeping only hashtags already used this month in some of your other queries.
- The third option is to remove one or more hashtags from other active searches and reactivate the topic at the beginning of the next following month when the limit renews.
